Chapter 10

Mick wasn’t at all ashamed to admit he sat panting and heart hammering in her bathroom for some minutes after getting his clothes on. It’d been a long time since he’d been caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing. Hell, maybe even since he was a teenager. And he could honestly say that in the thirty-odd years after he and Sally LaCosta relieved one another of their virginity in her parents’ rec room, he’d never, ever hidden in a bathroom or closet after doing the deed.

Proving there’s a first time for everything.

He looked down, checking his parts to see how the sum totaled up. All in all, Hope did well in collecting their clothes. He was missing only one sock. Sitting on the edge of the tub, he yanked the one he had onto his left foot, then wriggled both feet into his worn work boots. If he couldn’t find the mate on his way out, he’d retrieve it later.

Because this round of hide and seek proved only one thing to him: He and Lady Hope had a few ground rules to work out. Rule number one being, no stuffing him in closets or pushing him into bathrooms.

Heaving a heavy sigh, he knotted the laces, then let his hands dangle loose between his knees as he surveyed the room. Marble counters? Check. Jetted tub with separate shower? Check. The lights above the mirror bounced off gleaming fixtures. Curious, he opened a couple drawers, then poked his nose into the space below the sink. Empty. He stepped back, his brow furrowing as he tried to figure out what else was missing as he rose from the side of the tub. Then, he realized all that was missing.

No soap in the shower stall. Or shampoo. The place was completely stripped except for one of those decorator hand soap pumps and a single hand towel hanging from a nickel-plated loop. Hell, there wasn’t even an extra roll of toilet paper in there. The small tube of hand lotion tipped over on the countertop seemed out of place. The only sign of inhabitance in the whole room. He supposed it made sense. Hope hadn’t had much chance to settle in before she was forced to relocate to a hotel. Still, the emptiness felt odd and cold. The opposite of the warm woman he’d made love to a short time before. The same warm woman who’d tossed his clothes at him and hid him like a dirty secret.

Annoyance tweaked his nerves as he picked up the lotion and unscrewed the cap. It smelled fresh and clean. Like flowers, but not the perfume kind. More like wildflowers. And sunshine. And a dozen other goofy things he didn’t want to think about too much. After replacing the cap, he tossed the tube back onto the counter. No point in mooning over a woman whose first instinct after screwing him silly was to hide him in the damn bathroom.

Not that he was eager to face off with her sister.
